Here are some things that have been occupying space in my head over the past couple of weeks.

Joan Garry’s interview with Robert Raben about Strategic Planning on her podcast Nonprofits are Messy. I’ve been listening to Joan’s excellent pod for years, and she consistently delivers very insightful conversations with guests from across the nonprofit sector. In this episode, Mr. Raben cuts right to the quick on why real, honest strategic planning is so difficult, why it is so important, and why most nonprofits don’t really do it. This topic is very close to my heart, and I recommend that everyone take a listen — especially those of you who are involved with nonprofits!

While I’m on the topic of great podcast episodes, have a listen to this conversation between Timothy Myers and Mena Mark Hanna. Mena is the General Director of Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, SC, and he is such a bright spot in the world of arts leadership. His views on the classical music world are progressive, informed, creative, and worthy of our attention. While you’re there, check out the rest of Tim’s first season of Listening on Purpose episodes!

After a nice week at home in Raleigh with the NC Symphony, I’m back in Pittsburgh this week with the PSO for performances of Stravinsky’s Petrushka and Ravel’s Noble and Sentimental Waltzes. Fabien Gabel, making his Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra debut, conducts. If you’re around, come enjoy a beautiful evening of music.

My friend André de Ridder assumed his new position as General Music Director at Theater Freiburg a few weeks ago. He is certain to do many great things at this vibrant house. You can check out the great lineup of operas and concerts that he’s planned for this season here. André caught my attention and reminded of his amazing spirit when he posted video of cooking for the entire theater staff on his first day of work in Freiburg! Talk about an introduction!! This guy’s a special type of leader. Anyone want to go see him conduct Nico Muhly’s Marnie in January? Can’t swing that? Follow him on Instagram, at least.
