In an interview conducted by WDET radio in Detroit about the Detroit Symphony labor dispute, Joseph Horowitz, the former arts manager and author of Classical Music in America: A History, said that … players should no longer expect to work full time. His point is supported by his view that orchestras are presenting too many concerts.
First of all, the majority of working orchestral musicians don’t have full time (52 week) employment right now. Secondly, orchestras that engage musicians full time are offering more and more concerts not less.
Would Mr. Horowitz contend that a community could have too much music? Too many of one type of concert or too many concerts in one concert hall I can understand, but too many concerts?
