Music for Prague

I had the opportunity to perform Karel Husa‘s Music for Prague over the weekend with the North Carolina Symphony.  I had performed the wind ensemble version with Tempus Fugit and the Duquesne University Wind Ensemble with Mr. Husa conducting years ago, and it was great to come back to the piece. A few points come...

Five tips from Le Poisson Rouge

Ronen Givony thinks classical music could pick up some useful business tips from the rock and pop world. Givony is one of two music directors for Le Poisson Rouge, an alternative Greenwich Village cabaret that blurs the boundaries of the two musical realms, frequently putting artists from each on its nightly bill. He suggests five...

Big Star’s Third

I’m part of a very cool project on Thursday and Friday of this week at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC.  It’s a fully orchestrated live performance of Big Star’s third album – Sister Lovers.  Big Star was the band formed by Alex Chilton that so many musicians site as a major influence.  Local record producer,...

Horowitz!

In an interview conducted by WDET radio in Detroit about the Detroit Symphony labor dispute, Joseph Horowitz, the former arts manager and author of Classical Music in America: A History, said that … players should no longer expect to work full time.  His point is supported by his view that orchestras are presenting too many...

Penelope

On Monday, I had the pleasure of hearing yMusic and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) present a performance of Sarah Kirkland Snider‘s Penelope at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC.  The piece is a 60 minute song cycle loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey with text by Ellen McLaughlin.  Mrs. Worden’s performance was stunning, presenting colors and...

Dracula

The News and Observer did a nice article today about the Carolina Ballet’s Dracula.  J. Mark Scearce was commissioned for a brand new score, and I’ll be playing the gigantic percussion set-up.  It runs for the next three weekends in Raleigh.  More info here.

A Great Summer

So, as it turns out, I have neglected this space for the last couple of months.  It has been a busy, but great summer.  The concert season with the Colorado Music Festival was fantastic – great sounding orchestra, great programs, and great people!  You can check out some of the reviews from the summer here....

CMF – Week 1

The first week of the festival is over and it has been busy.  Two children’s concerts, a pops gala, two Festival Orchestra concerts, and a Percussion Ensemble concert for kids.  It’s been great to just dive in here.  The Percussion Section is really great, and so is the rest of the orchestra.  And it’s great...

Hitting the Road

It’s that time of the year.  Everything in my life seems to hit the fan at the same time.  In the next three weeks I’m playing Mahler 3 with the Pittsburgh Symphony, I’m taking an audition, and I’m driving to Boulder, CO in time for my first service with the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra.  In...
